In Y Ty on the morning of September 6, 2026, a woman born in 2026 did not need a starting gun to attract attention. The moment Van Trang crossed the finish line after 4 hours and 26 minutes in the 42km distance changed the ranking picture of the Y Ty Mu Vang race. She was not only the women’s champion of the toughest mountain distance of the day; she also finished second overall against almost the entire men’s field. Only one male runner finished ahead of her.
In the world of trail running, 42km in the mountains of Lao Cai is not a safe number. Y Ty Mu Vang is known for its terraced rice fields during harvest season, but that beauty does not soften the terrain. Runners face more than 1,300 meters of cumulative elevation gain; the climb to Lo Thoan Peak at 2,860 meters above sea level burns the muscles and turns every breath into a negotiation with endurance. This condition reveals the difference between a casual runner and a disciplined one.
Van Trang, nicknamed Jang Doll, is a mother of four from Hanoi. She said her result did not come from luck. On slopes that nearly drained her energy, she focused only on the path ahead, steadied her breath, managed her pace and refueled at the right moments. Apart from running, she also does gym sessions, swimming and supplementary exercises to build her body day by day. Her strategy did not start with her feet; it started with patience and the habit of listening to her body.
The sports story took a different turn when photos of Van Trang at the finish line were shared in running groups for harmful gossip. Instead of celebrating a female runner who had just beaten dozens of people, some online users focused on her natural bust. They even compared her body in a crude way to carrying two grapefruits while running. It is ironic that a woman who sustained 4 hours 26 minutes of continuous effort in high mountain terrain was reduced to a joke about her appearance.
Choosing not to stay silent, Van Trang responded directly: “I truly challenge anyone to carry two grapefruits while running 42km or 55km of mountain road! I run with my legs, not with my appearance, so why drag me into groups to gossip? Some people see pressure, but I see it as vitamin C for my spirit. What matters is that I still reached the finish line and I am healthy. Judge all you want; I run with my own legs, not with other people’s mouths.”
She also sent a message to those who look down on women in sport: “Women playing sports deserve to be recognized first for their effort and achievements. Appearance is each person’s story, but achievement is the result of years of training.”
When asked whether she would choose looser or more conservative clothing to avoid intrusive stares, Van Trang shook her head. For her, sportswear must first be comfortable and safe. If she changed herself only out of fear of judgment, she would always live according to other people’s eyes. Her answer marks a clear line between listening to feedback and letting strangers define her body.
The biggest paradox in this story is not that a mother of four finished second overall. The paradox lies in the reflex of some audiences: when a male runner faces a tactical issue, people ask how he managed his energy; when a female runner achieves a great result, some people choose to examine what she wore and what her body looks like. That prejudice still exists even in sports where physical strength and willpower are the main measures.
Y Ty Mu Vang 2026 has ended, but Van Trang’s journey is still expanding. Her next target is the 70km distance at the upcoming VMM event, then a 100km challenge later this year. For a woman who raises children while maintaining a serious training load, these numbers are not there to please anyone. She said: "Let achievements speak. I do not have to become the version others want to see. I just need to become a better version of myself every day."
There will be longer routes, steeper climbs and no shortage of outside noise. But Van Trang will keep running with her own legs. She does not need to shout about her body, because the result board has already answered for her in a language no one can argue with.
